Our dining room is done because we’ve discovered we are minimalists I guess. Also we already owned everything in here – vintage rug, color blocked bentwoods, traditional table, the hutch.
Our light fixture is the statement in this space. We didn’t want to take away from that, so we hung Willard (who I accidentally called Wilfred originally in this post, my apologies sir) off centered in here. The arch is so sexy. Let’s count it as art too.
We just felt like there was enough good happening without having to add much in here. We don’t need a buffet because we have enough storage in the kitchen. It would just be empty.
Plus we have this hutch. (Pay no attention to the glare where it shows the 3 of us attempting to get this shot. Ramona at the camera. I’m laughing so hard at this realization. At 10 pm. The night before this post goes live.) I don’t really have large collections of things to display, so it’s kind of a hodge podge of stuff in there.
Since Wilfred claimed his stake on the wall, I had to move the Pilgrim man out. It was too much creepiness for the minimalist vibe we were shooting for. Our vintage sign took his place. That brass swan was $5 at an antique store. No joke.
If anyone is looking for a blog name, may we suggest Antlers & Airplants. I’ve managed to keep these alive for months which is no small miracle. Nick brought them back from Austin with the creepy art.
This space represents our style so well. The modern fixture + the traditional table + classic chair with a twist + vintage rug + creepy art + the chalkboard with crazy kid scribble all over (technically in the hallway still counting it). We don’t follow design rules because we don’t know them. We just put stuff together and if we like it then it stays until we don’t.
At first I wanted a new rug since the bentwoods are so bright pink, but it’s such a great size for in there with it’s odd vintage dimensions. So there’s the dining room in all it’s finished minimalist glory.
OK, how did I miss those chairs!? Have you always had those? Did you paint them like that? They are amazing and I love them so much. More room tours please! Preferably with reflection shots of you both and the kids!
I have always had them if by always I mean 2 years, but they were in storage for like a year. You get a free pass on missing them! I painted them 2 years ago and have obsessed over them ever since.
Everything looks perfect. You guys are doing such a great job decorating your spaces xoxo
Well we now have 2 spaces – this and the nursery – to add to the finished pile around here. Seems like so much felt to do!
You guys are perfect. You have an effortless tongue-in-cheek minimalism that I would kill for… (You’ve been warned.)
I love that table with a passion!
It was a crazy good deal at Weir’s of all places.
Gorgeous! I wish I could pull of minimalist like you can. But, for example, when you say that if you had a buffet in that room it would just be empty? I don’t even understand what that means, so foreign to me is the concept of NOT filling up all available space with endless crap. So. Anyway, it’s looking AMAZING in here. I love off center Wilfred!
Bahaha well I have lots of cabinets in the kitchen even without any uppers. Give me a few years and I’ll start amassing more kitchen stuff to overflow into a then needed buffet.
I am so happy to see the chairs back. I have missed them :). I love everything that is going on in this room. I don’t believe that you don’t know any design rules, because you followed them beautifully here or it would not look this magnificent! You guys are rock starts and I love your “hutch family portrait”
Thank you Katja! Glad we have you fooled into our design sensibilities! Next time we photograph as a family I’ll have to sneak Beckett in there. He’s always been left out. He was probably just out of the shot playing under the table.
Those chairs! I love the space.
Thanks Anna! The chairs are still one of my favorite projects!
you might be a minimalist but you have maximum style. boom.
Bahaha comment win!
The dining room is looking so good! I love the rug and light fixture and that you hung the painting off centre. I’ve heard that minimalism can be good for creativity.
Haha good to know! It’s across from Nick’s office so maybe he will benefit from the minimalism!
Scott would be so thrilled if I became a minimalist. I am more like a maximist. Ooooh, maybe just Maximus, can that be my nickname?? And is Nick doing a pull up in the reflection? P90X whilst simultaneously shooting a room? Amazing.
We are always trying to incorporate workouts into blogging which is why we don’t blog consistently.
I love your dining room! The chairs and that rug are amazing!
Thank you!
I am in love with Wilfred;)
He’s a pretty stellar dude.
You guys are basically my favorite people, so it feels good to know that as you have your family dinners – complete with the fanciest of foods cooked in hr most elaborate, least simple way possible – you’ll have Willard there, looking over you and making sure everything is okay. Thanks, Willard.
Maximalist Baker in front of Willard all day son.
So I went and checked the original post and his name is Willard!! Crap. I thought his stare was a little harsh tonight.
Oops. I mean Wilfred. Hopefully he’s a forgiving guy. He looks more confused than forgiving, so I’m nervous.
Perfection!
I have loved those chairs since you first posted about them, and I NEED a similar (identical) hutch for my dining room.
I wonder if west elm still has this one. I know at one point they had it on deep discount, so they might have discontinued it.
Love everything. And it’s perfect you hung Willard off-centered. Your photos rule too.
Haha thank you! It’s so easy to get good pictures when your house gets crazy good light. Things I’m learning! 😉
This is beautiful. I can appreciate and even covet minimalism in others. Esp. you guys. This room is just beautiful.
We were shocked at how little it took to pull this room together and how much we love it. Of course you can see the living room wallpaper from the table, so it’s not like it feels empty you know. I bet once you will totally be able to relate in the barn.
Hmm, wow! Love the rug paired with the chairs in that space. Seriously, effortless style and I adore it!
Thanks Ashley!
