This week is House Hunters on Wills Casa. We are going to show you 3 houses that we looked at with our fingers crossed hoping to find the ONE.
First up a historic fixer upper in Downtown Weatherford. Specs:
- 5 bedrooms (although that’s debatable)
- 2 baths
- 3,165 Sq Ft
- Almost a half acre
- Built in 1874
The house had a peacock etched on the front door glass which was awesome along with a substantial front porch. The entry looks nicer than reality (minus the carpet) in this picture. The wallpaper is actually a stenciled pattern over the previous wallpaper. I cannot imagine the patience required to tackle something like that.
The kitchen was very small and outdated. The layout wasn’t conducive to ever becoming a well laid out space.
There were hardwoods under the green carpet downstairs, so there was hope underneath that mess. This room had several doors leading into it and was debatably the master. Although honestly the downstairs was a maze of random rooms, I guess they didn’t have good architects in 1874.
There were 3 bedrooms and a full bath with a claw foot tub upstairs. The hardwoods were in decent condition. The wallpaper was definitely picked for a Victorian house.
What we loved:
- How old the house was. It’s rare to find old homes in our area and this one was exceptionally old. I imagine it was epic back in 1874.
- The price was significantly under our budget.
- We could walk to the downtown Weatherford square/flea market where we do most of our antique shopping.
What we didn’t like:
- It was off a pretty busy street.
- No fence
- An incredible amount of work
- The layout
- Dark with crazy lighting/electrical
- Possible ghosts (I’m just throwing that in there because a house that old does scare me a little.)
In the end this house just wasn’t going to work for our family. It was too big of a project to live in with 2 small children especially since 1 of those children will be a newborn. Plus I’m not sure it would ever be something we could love due to the crazy layout.
oooh i love this! but i think you should not tell us if you chose it or not, and then give us all your options and let us guess! just like the show.
I thought about it, but then I didn’t think I was giving you enough information. Okay I guess you just convinced me!
BUT THE DOOR HAD A PEACOCK ON IT.
*sigh*
I would so have been all over that. But I totally get it- old houses are SO much work
I definitely want an old house. I love what they have to offer. There just aren’t many in our area which is a problem especially since we have to narrow the search further with schools since that’s only 2 years away. Then we have to think about the scope of work needed and find a layout. Alright I’m done explaining. I’m already exhausted thinking about it!
Prior to my current home, I lived in an adorable 1920s bungalow. It was so charming with a front porch swing, wood floors, and all. BUT the thing was a beast to maintain… The windows would crack at the slightest change in temperature… Anyway, unless Nick likes having a constant honey-do list, I’d pass!
Haha he doesn’t. I have been back and forth on this issue so much over the last few months. I know I don’t want a newer house either though. It’s like I can’t win! I guess I’ll stay at the parents for the rest of my life!!
Victorian seems so far away from your style, even though it’s an awesome old house. I can’t wait to see what else you’re going to show us!
You are exactly right. Nick is not into Victorian homes at all, but I made him go anyway. That’s the style of most of the older homes in Weatherford anyway. I was thinking maybe there could be some things done to make it less Victioriany, but it really wouldn’t be worth it in the end.
I am still looking at the curtains. Wow… just wow Those alone make that house worth whatever they are asking ha ha. Love it.
The curtains and the wallpaper make me really wonder how long it’s been sitting vacant and when the last time someone decorated there!
Cool place! I feel you on older houses–I love that they have so much more personality and charm than most modern builds do. There aren’t many old houses in our area, either, and although the ones we do have are so charming and cute, they are teeeeeeeeeny tiny! No one built big houses back in the olden days out here, I guess. I’m excited to see what you end up with!
This actually had a good amount of square footage, but it was laid out so strange that it felt much smaller. You’re right it’s difficult to find an older house that’s large enough to accommodate all our things nowadays!
I, too, love peacocks. However, a peacock does not make up for the FUGLY nature of that house. I’m so glad you didn’t get that one. You’ve got crazy skills, but the peacock is about the only thing that house has got going for it. Love my old house, btw, but somebody else did all the work and now I get to enjoy it! Can’t wait to see the next two!
Yes I love your old house too! It’s has so much character and those windows. Good gracious! You know I’ve been envious for years!
Thanks, Amber! Now I’m afraid you totally picked that house and I said it was ugly. I feel terrible. But I know you and Nick can do anything. Heck, you could make a metal building look good. . . maybe you should consider it! Love reading about your quest!
CORRECTION: I believe you said it was FUGLY Shelley, not just Ugly. Feelings so hurt right now.
Haha! Shelley, no matter what you say we still love you!
Okay so you knew I would chime in eventually. 😉
I know exactly where that house is- love the charm but it doesn’t say Nick & Amber to me.
Can’t wait to see the next pics. Did you check in to see if House Hunters would come here because if they do I would totally want to be that random friend that tags along. Happy hunting.
It really doesn’t look like something we would buy. The house across the street is completely us and also not for sale like most of the older homes in Weatherford! I did not check into House Hunters because I’m sure I would be edited to be ridiculous. It would be too easy!
This is the one because it doesn’t have furniture in it!!! Wait, that’s how the real show works.
And I don’t know but a haunted house might make for some mighty awesome blog material. Just saying…
Good point! I had not thought about how ghost content would really up the site stats and interest. With my luck, I would get a very decor minded ghost that would get very pissed at my tastes. Stupid opinionated ghosts.
You had me at peacock on the door. I love imagining the possibilities of major fixer uppers… but then I start to really think about the work, top to bottom… and it really stresses me out. As awesome as it would be to conquer that house, I’m right there with you. Too much work.
And, how nerdy is it that I am REALLY excited for your house hunters posts?! I think I love house hunting a little too much. It’s an addiction. When I have an extra 5 mins, I browse the MLS. Who does that?!
Why an awesome realtor like yourself of course!! I love house hunting and going into strange people’s houses to see how it’s decorated. However I am not enjoying house hunting in a booming market. It’s so high pressure and low inventory!
