Building: Wood Floors

Feast your eyes on pure sexiness on a floor. Yep that’s right I’m getting all hot and bothered over our wood floors. We used the same contractor that did our floors in the last house because our last floors were incredible and because he’s the guy our builder uses.

Each big change is even more exciting than the last. This was such a momentous change. I walked in and literally wanted to cry. Instead I texted my builder and John (the floor contractor). This is the photo evidence of that exchange.

We (well technically they) installed the floors in the entire downstairs with the exception being the bathrooms. Don’t they look great in Beckett’s nursery. A splurge yes, but it’s worth it. We enjoyed the heck out of our floors at the last place. Also it sticks with the whole mantra of building a house like they did in the old days but with modern luxuries.

The floors are gorgeous in their raw state.Β We went with 4 inch Red Oak. They were nailed down on site. Then we just finish the house around them – cabinets, trim, paint, etc. Before they can stain and scrape them to their glorious final state, the AC has to be on for 2 weeks for the floors to acclimate. This means they will be in for a couple of months before they are finished.

So that gives us time to think about how we want said floors to be finished. I love how these dark floors look especially with all the white walls (theΒ plan). They are rich and not very glossy which makes me love them even more.

Or we could go with medium tone. I love how warm these floors are. I think this read more classic than the other finishes.

There’s also the very light, almost natural tone. Our wood has a red tint to it, so the lightest stain will still show some red tones.

Honestly, there have been no decisions made on this. We are probably several weeks away from actually picking a stain out, so what do you think? Which finish should we go with keeping in mind the paint?

oh i like the light and natural- the wood is so pretty!

It’s definitely different from what we did last time. Plus it’s more of a Scandinavian feel which I’m really digging right now.

  2. I think with kids and dogs a natural light stain is always a good option. The darker you go the more the doghair and dust taunts you.

Everyone says that but our floors were very dark in the last house, and they didn’t show dirt and dog hair as much. I think having them finished with less of a shine helped curb that problem. I think no matter what stain we choose we are going to keep the shine to a minimum. I am liking the idea of going lighter just to do something different.

  3. LOVE the wood floors! Mr. Right and I are saving to replace all of our carpet in our living room/dining room with wood. I vote DARK – love how they contrast next to those white walls (which are also on our list… those will happen before the floors do, unless we hit the lottery… or Mr. Right gets to be the realtor for a lottery winner, and then we’ll do everything at once).

Oooo either way go Will! πŸ˜‰ We absolutely loved our dark floors. It was high on the priority list when we had Ramona because of allergy reasons. It really helped out to have hard surfaces everywhere when we potty trained. A very welcomed bonus.

  4. I love all of the options. It’s going to look gorgeous!!! If it were me…I’d stick with a lighter option. Less dust showing. I am all about the ability to hide dust bunnies.

  5. Oh they look HOT!!! :) Your floors are gorgeous!! Your house is coming together beautifully. I love everything. I am really into medium brown these days. I also love the light finish on the last picture. Very Scandinavian :)

    • Amber says:

Oh my gosh Katja I just said the same thing about the light finish! Great minds. πŸ˜‰ We are leaning towards the medium finish. I can’t wait to see the stain samples on the floor in the space to figure it out!

  6. FLOORS! Is there anything better? I am really partial to light floors these days. And I feel like they show less dust and dirt. I know whatever the Wills pick will be amazing. Your house is soooooo good!

    • Amber says:

We are digging on lighter floors too, but that inspiration image of the dark floors is so pretty too. I’m really interested to see the stains in the space to figure it out!

  7. Wood is good. The way to go in any home :) Love the inspiration images too! xo Kristin

Our new place has high ceilings and loads of light. We went with light grey walls and dark floors to ground the space. Could not be happier with the result. I’m a sucker for the dark!

    • Amber says:

I love the dark wood in the inspiration image. I think those floors are pine, so our wood grain will be different. I don’t think it matters as much when you go dark. I’m definitely ready to see some stain samples on the floor.

I love when people do the wood throughout, can’t stand when the floor gets chopped off and they put tiles down in the kitchen area.
I’m totally a light wood flooring girl too. Looks so pretty and they always look cleaner too. Dark wood is a pain in the rear.

    • Amber says:

We couldn’t put tile in the kitchen even if we wanted too because we’re planning on putting a table between that space. Can’t have uneven floors! Plus our layout is so open chopping the floors up would be awful!

  10. I want to roll on them regardless of stain color

  11. ooh, I’m in the minority voting dark! I really love the inspiration pic of the non-glossy dark floors. Ours are all basic 80’s style oak, and getting them refinished dark someday is definitely on my list.

    • Amber says:

I love that photo too. I didn’t really want to go dark at first since we did that last time, but that photo really makes me want to. I honestly don’t know which direction we will go until we see it on the floor. We mixed stains last time to get just the right tone, so we might do that again to get it perfect.

  12. Wow, I can’t believe the progress that has happened since I took an internet hiatus. It looks amazing!

    • Amber says:

Thanks Christine! I was just telling Nick tonight that I missed you! I know you have been traveling the world and then moving, so I understand the hiatus. We all need them. πŸ˜‰

  13. I’m voting dark for a few reasons. 1) I love dark floors 2) to me dark floors help “ground” the floor 3) I desperately wanted dark hardwood floors on the first floor of our home but our builder insisted that we must have tile in our kitchen and powder room. Lame. I’d like you to go with dark floors so I can live vicariously through you πŸ˜‰ Is that a compelling argument?

    • Amber says:

So compelling! I am a little nervous about having hardwoods in the kitchen, but there really wasn’t much I could do about that because of the nook situation and how open everything is. I know there will be things I wish we did differently, so I guess we can use that knowledge for the next build. πŸ˜‰

  14. I’m a fan of dark floors, but I don’t think you can really go wrong here. Really coming together!! Bet you’re excited!
